Jewellery Talk with Sotheby's Jewellery Specialist

Magnificent Jewels: The Stories Behind the Gems
Sophie Stevens
Jewellery Specialist, Sotheby's

Looking at some of the most exceptional jewellery designs from the last 150 years, we will explore the history of diamonds, precious gemstones and natural pearls. Beginning with the earliest diamond discoveries in the Golconda region and the later South African diamond rush, we will then unearth the beauty and rarity of Burmese rubies, Kashmiri sapphires and Colombian emeralds.

We will also look at the long allure of natural pearls (and how the rise of cultured pearls nearly pushed them into oblivion) and the famous ruby imposter, spinel. The talk will be illustrated throughout with exceptional pieces – many of them designed by the leading jewellery houses such as Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Bulgari – with a focus on Sotheby’s Fine Jewels auction in New York between 27th May and 11th June.

RSVP is essential. Space is limited.
