Untitled City (2022) is a colourful diptych of a metropolitan environment. The paintings seamlessly intersect from different sides, creating unique compositions that depend on the orientation each side is hung.

An artist as well as an architectural engineer, Layla Juma here draws on memories of her native Sharjah. She reflects on Crystal Plaza, a commercial complex of three towers completed in 1998 – the same year the city was awarded the “Cultural Capital of the Arab World” title by Unesco. In addition to looking at the skyline, Layla looks at the connecting points between the buildings, finding dynamic geometries and compositions.
