Overview
Bénédicte Gimonnet paints immersive rainforest environments in which extravagant vegetation acts as an allegory for the mind. The surfaces come from mixing supposedly unmixable painting materials, and the colour references Peruvian folklore rather than observed nature. Her compositions are deliberately not botanically, geographically or seasonally correct. The work follows Gimonnet's reconciliation with her Peruvian rootsand treats landscape as a record of identity rather than a place.Gimonnet was born in Clermont-Ferrand, France, in 1969 and has worked in the UAE for over thirteen years. Her solo exhibition Echoes of Edenwas held at the Municipal and Cultural Palace, Peru, in 2025, and her work is in the permanent collection of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Lima.
