Samar Hejazi USA, b. 1987

Overview

Samar Hejazi (b. California, 1987) is a Palestinian-Canadian visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans textiles, sculpture, installation, and printmaking. Drawing on diverse global craft traditions, she explores the shifting nature of perception and meaning-making. Her work engages light, shadow, reflection, and movement to create immersive environments that evoke memory, identity, and inner landscapes.

Hejazi’s recent solo exhibitions include In Circulation at Aisha Alabbar Gallery, Dubai (2026); Illusions of Separation at the Aurora Cultural Centre, Canada (2023); Geometries of Difference at Open Studio Project Space, Toronto (2022); and An Unravelling at The Plumb, presented as part of the Toronto Palestine Film Festival (2020).

Her work has been featured in major international group exhibitions, including Abu Dhabi Art at Manarat Al Saadiyat, Abu Dhabi (2025); Sila at Maraya Art Centre, Sharjah (2025); Whispers of the Past at Sotheby’s DIFC, Dubai (2025); Rise Habibi at Crypt Gallery, London (2025); Ihsan: Part of Islamic History at Winnipeg Art Gallery (2024); Women in War by the Intisar Foundation, Kuwait (2024); the Sharjah Islamic Arts Festival at Sharjah Art Museum (2023); Ghostly Makers at Burnaby Art Gallery (2023); Fragility at MIA Art Collection, Canadian University Dubai (2022); and As They Gaze Upon Us with Banat Collective and Warehouse421, Abu Dhabi (2021).

Hejazi has participated in international residencies at Arquetopia in Oaxaca, Puebla, and Cusco, receiving multiple scholarships in recognition of her contributions to contemporary craft-based practices. Her work has been featured in publications including Artnet, Vogue Arabia, Elle Canada, The Globe and Mail, BlackFlash Magazine, Create! Magazine, Art Queens Volume II, and Studio Magazine.

She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in New Media from Ryerson University, Toronto (2013). Her work is held in numerous international private collections, and she was recently commissioned by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, for inclusion in its permanent collection.

Hejazi has also participated in art fairs such as Interwoven Realities at Abu Dhabi Art (2025) and Editions Art & Design Fair at Dubai Design District (2024).

She currently lives and works in Dubai, UAE.
